Dr Wendy Cooper

I qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1995 and worked for the NHS in adult mental health, helping people with a wide variety of mental health issues. More recently, I have worked as a psychologist and integrative therapist in higher education, as well as in private practice.

I have extensive experience supporting adults of all ages as they navigate the impact of difficult experiences and relationships, both past and present. As an integrative therapist, I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches—cognitive behavioural, cognitive analytic, psychodynamic, and solution-focused, all held within a humanistic framework that centres the importance of the therapeutic relationship. I work compassionately and collaboratively to create a safe and supportive space, providing the conditions to enable change. Using this approach, I formulate an approach tailored to the individual and their needs.

We usually begin by exploring what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain from our work together. This first session helps us develop an initial understanding of the issues and to begin to think how we might approach these. Sometimes people come with a sense that something isn’t quite right but are unsure what the problem may be and that is where we begin.

I believe that all experiences can shape us in meaningful ways, even when they involve significant difficulty or challenge. Therapy can be a powerful way to make sense of and process our experiences. When we are able to do this, people often find that the difficulties troubling them, for example symptoms such as anxiety and low mood, begin to improve. As a psychologist trained in the NHS, I also have significant experience in taking a symptom-focused starting point if that feels likely to be most helpful.
